🏴☠️ Kion and F6 Deanonymize Digital Pirate
Online streaming platform Kion, in collaboration with cybersecurity firm F6, has tracked down an illegal content distributor and brought the case to criminal prosecution.
The investigation centers on the leaked release of the series The Verdict (Privogor), starring Anton Vasilyev, which was illegally uploaded to torrent trackers.
According to estimates by the copyright holder, over 150,000 users viewed the illegal copy, with total damages caused by the perpetrator exceeding 15 million rubles.
The investigation began in May, when Kion engineers detected that the series had been downloaded in bypass of DRM protection systems and traced the user’s initial digital footprint. Analysts from F6 then conducted an in-depth investigation, gathering evidence and documenting the full distribution chain across pirate resources.
All gathered digital evidence and documentation were submitted to the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation. Following investigative measures, law enforcement authorities identified the suspect as a 59-year-old resident of Moscow.
Criminal proceedings have been initiated under Clause “v,” Part 3, Article 146 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (infringement of copyright and allied rights on an especially large scale). The offense carries a penalty of up to six years’ imprisonment.
Representatives from Kion emphasized that this case sets a crucial precedent for the entire industry, demonstrating that joint efforts by anti-piracy companies, legitimate streaming platforms, and law enforcement agencies can effectively shift the fight from blocking mirror websites to holding specific individuals criminally accountable.
