〽️ Satellite TV revenue is declining
Alexey Volin, CEO of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise Russian Satellite Communications Company (RSCC), announced at the Satcomrus 2025 conference an impending drop in revenue for satellite operators from video signal transmission.
Revenue from video transmission, which is the main driver for geostationary (GEO) satellites, is expected to fall from $4.7 billion (in 2023) to $2.6 billion by 2033. This decline is anticipated mainly in the US and Europe, while the volume of services will remain the same in Eastern Europe (including Russia) and will grow in Asia and Africa.
Despite a fourfold increase in the number of HD channels (in Russia and Central Asia), which will boost operator traffic, global bandwidth is projected to grow tenfold by 2029 (to 250 Tbit/s). This will lead to a fivefold drop in the cost of satellite communication services.
The overall satellite communications market is expected to grow to $25.7 billion by 2033. However, the share of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations will surge from 15% to 70% ($18 billion), while the share of traditional GEO satellites will fall to 30%.
