๐Ÿ†– FCC accelerates transition to Next Gen TV

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is actively pushing the transition of television broadcasting to the ATSC 3.0 (Next Gen TV) standard, which unlocks access to 4K resolution, HDR, and immersive audio for viewers.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr announced that a vote to speed up this transition will take place in October.

It is proposed that broadcasting in the older ATSC 1.0 standard should completely cease by February 1, 2030.

For the 55 largest US markets, this deadline may be set for February 2028.

ATSC 3.0 was adopted as a standard back in 2017, and its signal is now available to 75โ€“80% of households. According to Carr, this standard is the “future of broadcasting,” which is particularly important for the delivery of local news.

The transition will require significant investment from broadcasters, but the FCC believes it will allow them to better compete with technology giants.
