⛔️ Japan demands halt to use of anime characters in Sora 2
The Japanese government has formally demanded that OpenAI cease copyright infringement, as the new video generator Sora 2 is capable of creating clips featuring characters from protected franchises.
The Minister in Charge of Intellectual Property, Minoru Kiuchi, called manga and anime “irreplaceable treasures” and emphasized that the request for non-proliferation of Japanese intellectual property was sent through the Cabinet.
Japanese authorities are hoping for voluntary steps from OpenAI but are prepared to implement measures under the AI Promotion Act.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously acknowledged the issue and promised to provide rights holders with “more granular control” over character generation, including the option for a complete ban on their use. He specifically highlighted the importance of Japanese content.
