๐ Ericsson, Nokia, and HHI create codec for 6G
European technology giants Ericsson and Nokia have partnered with the German Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) to develop and promote a new video coding standard that will define the media landscape in the 6G era.
The partners have combined their expertise for the first time and demonstrated a new video codec that provides significantly higher compression efficiency compared to current standards (H.266/VVC, H.265/HEVC). Crucially, it achieves this without substantially increasing complexity while also boosting energy efficiency.
The research demonstrates a technology capable of meeting the demands of the next phase of video standardization.
A joint application has already received a positive assessment from international regulatory bodies. The new coding standard, which is essential for high-quality streaming and immersive media, is expected to become operational by 2029โ2030, coinciding with the forecast for 6G network deployment.
