🇪🇺 EU Stands Against US Pressure
The European Parliament has defended a key EU media law, the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD), warning against external pressure from the US aimed at weakening European rules.
The AVMSD applies to all media providers in the EU, including major US streaming platforms. This law is aimed at preventing discrimination based on content origin.
The goal of the AVMSD is to ensure a level playing field in the market while protecting cultural and linguistic diversity and media pluralism. The European Commissioner called this a matter of cultural sovereignty and the foundation of European democracy.
The Parliament urged the EU to protect the “cultural exception” in trade negotiations to preserve the right to set its own media rules.
This statement followed criticism from US authorities and IT giants. The head of the EBU called the European Parliament’s decision a “restoration of the truth.”
