⚖️ Russian cinema chain wins "Lost Profit" lawsuit against Sony Pictures
The merged cinema chain "Cinema Park" and "Formula Kino" has won a lawsuit against the former Russian office of the Hollywood studio Sony Pictures (LLC "Content Club").
The Moscow Arbitration Court satisfied the cinema chain’s claim, obligating the ex-Sony office to pay 162 million rubles as compensation for lost profit following the major’s withdrawal from the Russian market in March 2022.
The cinema chain stated that due to the absence of 15 new Sony Pictures releases in Russian distribution, it suffered a shortfall in box office revenues. The initial claim amount from the network’s two legal entities was 578 million rubles.
Representatives of the Content Club insisted that granting licenses is a right, not an obligation, and that the company was objectively unable to provide them due to reasons beyond its control.
Previously, the ex-Sony Pictures office itself successfully sued Cinema Park for almost 0.5 billion rubles in debt under already concluded film screening agreements.
