🇪🇺 European Streamers Urge Lawmakers Not to “Regulate Them to Death”

The trade association European VOD Coalition (an alliance of VoD services) has submitted its response to the European Commission’s consultation on the Digital Fairness Act, calling for caution and restraint against excessive regulation.

VoD services are a key growth driver — in 2024, they invested around €5.5 billion in original European content.

The coalition urges the EC to strike a balance between consumer protection and business realities. Streamers are already heavily regulated, and disproportionate “one-size-fits-all” legislation would harm the industry.

Any intervention should be proportionate and avoid duplicating existing rules. Personalized advertising or recommendation systems should not be treated as inherently harmful, as they enhance user experience.

The coalition emphasizes that fairness must work both ways — protecting consumers while preserving the business models that finance European audiovisual production.
