🇦🇺 Australia Introduces Strict Quotas on Global Streaming Content

The Australian government has unveiled new regulations requiring major international streaming platforms (with over 1 million subscribers) to invest in local content production — either 10% of their total Australian expenditure or 7.5% of their total national revenue.

The goal is to ensure that Australian content continues to be produced and remains accessible to audiences. Until now, such quotas applied only to free-to-air and pay-TV, not to streaming services.

Global streamers — including Prime Video, Disney+, and Netflix — had previously opposed the quotas, arguing that their current investment levels were already sufficient.

The plan has been welcomed by local industry groups, including the Australian Writers’ Guild (AWG).

Arts Minister Tony Burke stated that the law ensures that “no matter which remote you hold in your hand, Australian content will be within reach.”
