⚖️ Samsung Fined for OLED Display Patent Infringement

South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics has been fined $191.4 million in the U.S. for infringing two patents owned by the Irish company Pictiva Display, according to reports.

A Texas jury found that a wide range of Samsung devices violated Pictiva’s patent rights related to technology that enhances the resolution, brightness, and energy efficiency of OLED displays.

In its 2023 lawsuit, Pictiva claimed that its technology is used in Samsung Galaxy smartphones, as well as in the company’s TVs, computers, and wearable devices.

Samsung announced plans to appeal the verdict, adding that it is already challenging the validity of the patents in question before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

This ruling is one of several major penalties Samsung has faced in the Marshall, Texas court, a frequent venue for patent holders suing technology companies.
