🏴☠️ La Liga Urges EU to Take Tough Action Against Pirates
Spain’s La Liga has called on the European Commission (EC) to adopt binding legislation to combat online piracy of sports broadcasts, after an EC report confirmed the ineffectiveness of current voluntary measures.
The main structural issue is the lack of cooperation from tech intermediaries (CDNs, hosting providers), which act as “digital shields” for illegal streams. This has long been one of La Liga’s key complaints, particularly concerning Cloudflare.
Supported by 36 major media companies, La Liga is calling for a unified EU legal framework with clear blocking deadlines and mandatory compliance for all intermediaries.
Losses from audiovisual piracy in Spain are estimated at €600–700 million per year. Thanks to court rulings, La Liga managed to reduce piracy levels by 60% in the 2024/25 season.
The league expects the new European law to be adopted soon.
