😱 French Thematic Channels Are Losing Hundreds of Millions
Over the past ten years, French thematic TV channels have lost around €800 million in distribution revenue. Advertising revenue over the same period has fallen by 40%, according to the trade association ACCES.
In 2025, eight thematic channels were shut down (including Game One, MTV Hits, BET), and 400 jobs were cut.
These pay TV channels account for one-third of the entire television industry’s turnover and 24% of investments in local production.
TF1 Group’s Head of Content Ara Aprikian noted that the business model is under severe pressure due to declining distribution income, growing international competition, and piracy.
In 2024, piracy reached 9 million consumers and resulted in €200 million in losses.
Broadcasters emphasize that the current regulatory framework is not adapted to their needs and are calling on the authorities to carry out a “regulatory reform.” Without government action, many thematic channels will disappear.
