⚖️ Streaming Services Required to Invest in Australian Content
Australia has passed one of the world’s strictest SVoD regulations.
Global platforms (Netflix, Amazon, Disney+, and others) with more than 1 million subscribers are now required to invest in local production at least 10% of their total content spend or 7.5% of their total Australian revenue.
Eligible content is strictly limited to dramas, children’s programming, and documentaries. Reality shows are excluded.
Administration will be handled by ACMA (the Australian Communications and Media Authority). Significant fines are provided for non-compliance. According to local analysis, in extreme cases Netflix could face penalties of up to A$975 million.
Australian producers welcomed the law as a long-awaited guarantee of investment in local stories. However, streaming services warn that strict genre limitations and high penalties may reduce flexibility and lead to higher subscription prices.
