🇮🇹 Italy Requires Key Sports and Cultural Events to Be Shown Free-to-Air

Italy has approved a new, stricter list of “events of major societal importance” that must be made available for free-to-air viewing.

The regulation applies to all platforms, including streaming services (Sky Italia, DAZN, Amazon).

Mandatory free-to-air coverage includes all FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship matches featuring the Italian national team, as well as UEFA finals involving Italian clubs.

For tennis, free access is required for the semifinals and finals of the Internazionali d’Italia and Grand Slam tournaments (when Italian players participate).

The list of cultural events formally includes the Sanremo Music Festival, the Eurovision final, and the opening nights of opera seasons at La Scala and San Carlo.

The obligations will take effect once current rights contracts expire.
