⚖️ Italy Files Its First Lawsuit Against AI
Italian media companies RTI and Medusa Film, both part of the Mediaset Group, have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. company Perplexity AI, a developer of generative AI.
The case, submitted to the Civil Court of Rome, marks the first legal precedent in Italy challenging the unauthorized use of content for AI training.
RTI and Medusa claim that Perplexity AI used massive volumes of their audiovisual and film material without permission to train its models, constituting a direct violation of copyright and related rights.
The plaintiffs demand that the court declare Perplexity AI’s actions unlawful, order the immediate cessation of unauthorized content usage, and require the company to pay damages.
In 2024, Mediaset Group had already taken preventive action by adding copyright notices to the credits of its popular programs explicitly prohibiting the use of footage for training generative AI or automated data scraping.
