⚖️ Britons Want Anime to Be Regulated

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) conducted a study on the perception of sexualized content in anime.

88% of respondents agree that anime may pose a potential risk to child safety, as parents unfamiliar with the medium often assume it is “for kids by default.”

Anime already accounts for 24% of content classified for physical media in 2025.

81% believe that sexual scenes in anime should be rated the same way as in live-action cinema.

The strongest rating-raising factors are abuse of power (86%) and fan service—gratuitous content added primarily to tease the viewer. Around 90% say that deliberate framing and close-ups emphasizing a character’s physical features add a sexualized meaning.

90% of respondents consider BBFC age ratings and guidance essential for parents and believe they must be unified and consistent across all platforms.
