⚖️ Google Accused of Unfair Use of Content
The European Commission (EC) has launched an antitrust investigation into Google, suspecting the company of abusing its dominant position by using content from web publishers and YouTube creators to train its AI services.
Google is alleged to have imposed unfavorable conditions, giving itself privileged access to content for AI Overviews without providing adequate compensation. Publishers cannot opt out without risking a loss of visibility in search results.
Google is also accused of using YouTube creators’ videos to train generative AI models without compensation, while simultaneously blocking competitors from accessing the same content.
The EC fears that this behavior harms rival AI developers and further strengthens Google’s dominance.
“The investigation will be conducted as a priority, as a free and democratic society depends on diverse media and open access to information,” the EC stated.
