📗 BBC Set for Reform

The UK government has launched the process of reviewing the BBC’s Royal Charter, which is due to expire in 2027. A “Green Paper” has been published outlining a wide range of proposed reforms.

The government is considering changes to the BBC’s funding model, including:

🔸 reform of the licence fee;
🔸 updates to licence fee concessions;
🔸 options to increase commercial revenue.

The document also discusses:

🔹 reducing the government’s role in appointing board members to strengthen public trust;
🔹 updating the BBC’s mission so that accuracy carries equal weight with impartiality, alongside greater transparency;
🔹 introducing new duties to combat misinformation and promote media literacy (including work with AI);
🔹 setting specific workplace conduct requirements so the BBC sets standards for the entire sector;
🔹 introducing an obligation to stimulate economic growth and support the UK’s creative economy.
