The 2026 “New Year box-office battle” became the most successful on record.
According to the Unified Automated Information System (EAIS), box office takings surpassed the 10 billion ruble mark for the first time, nearly 1.5 times higher than last year’s result. A record 18.8 million people visited cinemas.

Prostokvashino and Buratino followed closely, each grossing around 2 billion rubles. Prostokvashino led in the regions, while Buratino dominated in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Among foreign films, The Housemaid starring Sydney Sweeney (117 million rubles) and the third installment of Now You See Me made it into the top 10.
Experts note that the success was driven by long holidays, cold weather, and strong marketing. The average ticket price also rose to 533 rubles.
Forecasts for the full year of 2026 are optimistic: audiences can look forward to Kolobok and Kholop 3 in the summer.
