🔖 Matthew McConaughey vs. AI Clones
Actor Matthew McConaughey has taken a decisive step to protect his digital likeness.
He has officially registered eight trademarks with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office covering his appearance, voice, and even his famous memes.
The actor now officially owns rights to:
©️ the iconic phrase “Alright, alright, alright”;
©️ short video clips (3 to 7 seconds long) that have become memes;
©️ audio recordings of his lines featuring his signature pauses and intonation.
Existing laws already protect celebrities from the commercial use of their likeness, but trademarks allow rights holders to go straight to federal court—even if AI-generated content is created “just as a joke.”
Notably, McConaughey is not fighting technological progress itself: he has invested in the AI startup ElevenLabs and uses a synthesized voice for his newsletter. His goal is to make creator consent and control over one’s image a mandatory standard in the age of neural networks.
