🧐 UK Politicians Call to Block Netflix–WBD Merger
The proposed $83 billion merger between Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery has met strong resistance in the UK.
A group of more than ten prominent politicians and former officials has urged the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to launch a full-scale investigation into the deal.
The signatories — including three former UK Culture Secretaries and ex-BBC Director-General Tony Hall — warn that the acquisition would turn Netflix into a monopoly capable of dictating terms to the entire market.
Lawmakers fear that reduced competition could lead to higher subscription prices and less diversity in content.
Earlier, the U.S. Congress already labeled the merger an “antitrust nightmare.”
The situation continues to escalate: the European Union is reportedly preparing to simultaneously review acquisition bids for WBD from both Netflix and Paramount Skydance — a rare parallel investigation for the European media market.
