🎬 Russian Film Exports in Crisis

The Russian film industry is undergoing a painful restructuring. After the golden year of 2019 — when international box‑office revenues peaked at $52.6 million — export performance has gone into a steep decline.

The numbers speak for themselves.

By 2024, overseas revenues had stabilized at just $16–18 million, and the first nine months of 2025 showed a further 44% drop compared to the previous year.

Animation as a lifeline. It remains the only segment in demand abroad, accounting for up to 80% of total international earnings. In 2024, animated films occupied four of the five top spots among Russia’s highest‑grossing foreign releases.

The withdrawal of global distributors has deprived Russian cinema of access to international networks and major marketing budgets. Promotion is now a manual process based on direct deals with local distributors.

The industry is weighing the introduction of state subsidies for dubbing and overseas promotion. However, experts warn that money alone won’t solve the problem if films continue to rely solely on domestic cultural codes that foreign audiences can’t relate to. The future of Russian film exports lies in striking a balance between authenticity and the universal language of cinema.
