🚫 YouTube Blocks Audience Measurement System
Google has forced UK research organizations Barb and Kantar Media to suspend their new service for measuring the popularity of YouTube channels on TV screens.
The tool was designed to directly compare the reach of creators with that of traditional television and streaming platforms.
The company sent formal complaints, stating that Kantar’s methodology violated API usage policies and the rights of content creators.
The service, launched in July 2025, tracked 200 of the largest channels, using household routers and audio‑matching technology to determine precisely what families were watching on their big screens.
Advertisers and regulators have long sought transparent cross‑platform data — essentially, who draws a bigger TV audience: a primetime talk show or a new video from a top YouTuber? However, by defending its data and “creator rights,” Google has effectively deprived the market of that transparency.
YouTube maintains that it supports third‑party research, but only when partners strictly comply with the platform’s policies.
