📺 8K TVs Fade into History
The 8K era, which barely got started, is now winding down. LG has followed Sony and TCL in announcing its exit from 8K panel production.
Consumers have decided that 4K with HDR10+ or Dolby Vision delivers picture-perfect quality, while the difference with 8K is barely perceptible to the naked eye.
8K’s potential only shines on screens 80–100 inches or larger, which remain prohibitively expensive. Owners also frequently complained about the massive power consumption of these sets.
Beyond Japan’s NHK and occasional broadcasts in China, there’s virtually no 8K content to watch.
Samsung remains the last major player in the market, though even its ambitions in this space are growing more modest.
8K seems destined to follow the fate of 3D TVs — the market simply wasn’t ready. For now, the industry is embracing “screen gigantism” — displays are getting bigger, but sticking with 4K resolution.
