👁🗨 How Russian Viewers’ Tastes Have Changed in 10 Years
Online cinema service Kion and the Kino-Teatr.Ru portal conducted a large study: what we watched in 2016 and what we choose now, at the start of 2026.
It turns out the foundation of the modern market was laid exactly ten years ago.
📺 Retrospective of 2016
The absolute leader was the series “Major” (3.3 million visits). The hype lasted for years, and the TV network dictated the rules of the game.
Even then, viewers had largely switched to domestic hits: “Kitchen,” “Youth,” “Olga,” and “Anna Detective.”
A long tail: the project’s popularity stretched across the year due to broadcast reruns.
▶️ Reality in 2026
The center of power has finally shifted to online platforms. Now success means an instant rise, viral memes on social networks, and “binge” viewing of an entire season at once.
The leading title on release was “Alice in Wonderland” with Anna Peresild. Top charts also included “Crazy Empress,” “Zheka Russell,” and “Family Man” with Pavel Derevyanko.
The success of “Major in Dubai” proves that heroes from a decade ago remain relevant, but now in a new, platform-centric reading.
Main takeaway: we still love homegrown stories and the series format, but now we want everything, fast, while controlling algorithms and shaping trends in real time.
