😔 Film Academy Abandons the Big Screen

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has made a decision that has sparked outrage among Hollywood filmmakers.

The organization will no longer hold in‑person screenings of Oscar‑nominated films after the nominations are announced.

The Academy calculated that over the past two years, such screenings in London, New York, and Los Angeles were attended by an average of just five people, while venue rentals cost thousands of dollars. The leadership decided to save resources and direct all voting members to the Academy Screening Room, a private online platform.

Members of the Academy are furious. They find it ironic that the world’s leading film institution is forcing them to watch cinema on ā€œsmall screens.ā€ Protesters argue that large‑scale productions like Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein or Avatar: Fire and Ash cannot be fairly judged at home on a couch.

The Academy responded that members had more than 300 opportunities to see these films in theaters before nominations—and that it’s time to embrace the digital era.
