⚖️ Disney to Pay for Playing with User Data
The Walt Disney Company has lost its battle with California authorities over the privacy of its viewers and, under a settlement, will pay a $2.75 million penalty for collecting personal data and making the opt-out process excessively complicated.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta accused Disney of deliberately complicating the opt-out procedure, forcing Disney+ users and those of other platforms to jump through hoops to stop the company from selling their data and serving targeted advertising.
Under the court-approved agreement, Disney has 90 days to stop sharing users’ data with third parties without clear and simple consent.
Its apps must display “crystal-clear” notices explaining what data is collected and how users can refuse such collection or sharing.
The company is also banned from forcing people to disable tracking on each device separately — a user’s choice must apply to their entire profile at once.
