🎞 Morocco in the Spotlight at Berlinale 2026
Morocco has been named “Country in Focus” at the European Film Market (EFM) during Berlinale 2026.
For years, the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara served merely as exotic backdrops for Hollywood, doubling for Mars or the Middle East, but now the country is positioning itself as a powerful creative hub in its own right.
Morocco is shifting from being primarily a service location (hosting shoots for titles like Men in Black and The Wheel of Time) to developing its own exportable content. Most of the producers representing the country in Berlin this year are women.
At the market, Morocco presented “K‑1,” a crime drama about an elite police unit, developed according to international showrunning standards.
Why shooting in Morocco pays off:
▪️ 30% cash rebate. The country reimburses a third of production costs on spends starting from €1 million.
▪️ Infrastructure. Morocco offers the Oasis Studios facility in Ouarzazate (the “Moroccan Hollywood”), tax incentives, and logistical support from the army for large‑scale battle scenes.
▪️ Versatility. Its unique landscapes allow filmmakers to mimic dozens of countries without crossing borders.
Moroccan cinema no longer wants to be defined from the outside. A new generation of creators has come to Berlin to set its own terms and compete for the global market on equal footing with Europe and the United States.
