🇯🇵 Japan Streaming: Anime, Sports and a $7.2 Billion Market

Japan’s VoD market is in full boom: in 2025, sector revenue grew by 15% to reach $7.2 billion, driven by the rollout of ad-supported tiers and an aggressive battle for sports rights.

Netflix ranks No. 1 by revenue with a 22% share of the market, boosted by its partnership with KDDI and a slate of successful Japanese originals. Amazon Prime Video leads in subscriptions with 19.3 million users.

Local player U-Next is successfully squeezing global giants by bundling video, manga, music, and exclusive sports in a single package.

Domestic content accounts for 80% of total viewing time, while Netflix is already laying the groundwork to capture sports fans, having acquired rights to the 2026 World Baseball Classic for Japan.

The market has shifted from simple subscriber growth to complex monetization. Now the winners are those who best integrate streaming into broader ecosystems and offer live “event” content in real time.
