📹 Britain Invests in Documentary Film

The British Film Institute (BFI) has announced a major boost for documentary filmmaking.

Under its new 2026–2029 funding plan, the organization Doc Society will receive £7.2 million (around $9.8 million) from National Lottery funds, a 20% increase on the previous three‑year period.

For the first time, a dedicated fund for immersive projects (VR/AR) is being launched, alongside a separate development fund for feature‑length documentaries.

Funding will be split into two streams — one for newcomers and one for experienced directors — to help talent avoid burnout and remain in the industry over the long term.

Grants will be distributed across the entire UK and will cover short films as well as experimental formats.

BFI Filmmaking Fund director Mia Bays noted that in a “noisy and fragmented world,” independent documentary film remains a vital force that helps people make sense of reality.
