🏅 2026 Oscar Winners for Technical Achievements in Film Announced
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has named 15 recipients of its annual Scientific and Technical Awards.
First presented in 1931, this honor recognizes innovations that have shaped the art and craft of global cinema for decades.
The official ceremony will take place on April 28 at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, celebrating 27 engineers and developers.
🏆 Key achievements this year include:
🌟 On-set safety. Brent Bell, Josef Köhler, and Jan Medwell were honored for creating lead-free pyrotechnics used to simulate bullet impacts—maintaining realistic effects while complying with new environmental standards.
🌟 Graphics revolution. Teams from Wētā FX (Manuka system), ILM (Lama system), and Framestore were recognized for developing multilayer shading systems that let artists produce photorealistic materials without writing code.
🌟 Animation stylization. Tools from Sony Pictures Imageworks and DreamWorks Animation received acclaim for enabling unique hand-drawn visual styles in modern animated films.
🌟 Sound restoration. The dxRevive Pro software was awarded for reconstructing dialogue with such precision that actors no longer need to re-record lines in post-production (ADR).
🌟 Stop-motion. The creators of Dragonframe received an honorary award for software that has become the global standard in stop-motion animation.
Unlike the main Oscar statuettes, these honors are not tied to specific films from a given year but rather acknowledge technologies that have proven their enduring value to the industry over time.
