🏆 “The Golden Bear” goes to a drama about censorship
The 76th Berlin International Film Festival has wrapped, and the top prize has gone to German-Turkish director İlker Çatak, whose film Yellow Letters took home the Golden Bear.
This is Çatak’s fifth feature (he was previously Oscar-nominated for “The Teachers’ Lounge”). Set in Turkey, the story follows an actress and her professor husband whose lives collapse under pressure from an authoritarian government. Jury president Wim Wenders called the film “a wake-up call for the entire world,” while critics have already drawn parallels between its atmosphere and contemporary political realities in the United States.
Other key awards included:
🎖 Best director: Grant Gee for the biopic about jazz pianist Everybody Digs Bill Evans.
🎖 Best leading performance: Anatomy of a Fall star Sandra Hüller received the Silver Bear for her role in Rose.
🎖 Jury prize: Lance Hammer’s drama Queen at Sea (with supporting actors also honored).
🎖 Best screenplay: Geneviève Dulude-de Celles for Nina Roza.
The Berlinale once again confirmed its status as the most political of the “big three” festivals, giving pride of place to sharply social, politically engaged cinema.
