🏮 Chinese cinema transforms in the AI era

Experts at the FilMart forum in Hong Kong discussed the future of Chinese filmmaking.

Despite a 52.9% revenue drop in early 2026 compared to 2025 records, China’s market ($1.58 billion) still leads North America by $350 million.

Domestic films dominate, accounting for 80% of box office receipts.

Artificial intelligence has emerged as the key trend. Director Lu Chuan called AI a “full-fledged partner” that accelerates visualization and cuts costs.

Experts agree, however, that neural networks cannot replace human sincerity and acting. In animation, Chinese AI software already competes with global standards, while in production it optimizes budgets.

The audience profile is also shifting: women now make up 60% of viewers, with major growth coming from smaller cities.
