๐ŸŽฆ Streaming platforms love theatrical releases

A European Audiovisual Observatory study has confirmed a direct link between big-screen success and streaming popularity.

Films that have had a theatrical release account for nearly two-thirds of all viewing time on Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video, despite making up less than half of their libraries. Box office hits are watched 11 times more than low-profile releases.

Platform originals are a particular phenomenon. Representing just 6% of catalogues, they capture 25% of audience attention. The top 100 most-watched films online in Europe are almost exclusively American blockbusters.โ€‹

National cinema availability varies widely: in Spain, 66% of local hits are on streaming, while in Finland only two films from the top 100 are available.โ€‹

The research proves that a theatrical release remains the best advertising for a film’s subsequent digital afterlife.
