Ryan Gosling as a schoolteacher sent on an intergalactic mission to save Earth delivered Amazon MGM its best opening ever. The picture outperformed Scream 7 and Creed 3 in earnings. Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie) created a visual masterpiece: IMAX theaters alone generated $27.6 million.
For Amazon, this marks the first major win in the film business after a string of flops earlier this year.
The film’s success confirms that audiences crave high-quality original sci-fi and epic space stories. The studio has 13 more releases ahead, including the June blockbuster Masters of the Universe.
