🛒 Netflix Selects Its Next Target
After its ambitious attempt to acquire media giant Warner Bros. Discovery stalled due to bureaucratic hurdles and an exorbitant price tag, Netflix has swiftly pivoted its attention to a more accessible yet strategically flawless target.
According to industry insiders, the streaming service is seriously considering the acquisition of Lionsgate, a studio that owns one of the most coveted intellectual property libraries in Hollywood. While a formal offer has not yet been submitted, sources confirm that Netflix leads the shortlist of potential suitors.
For Netflix, acquiring Lionsgate represents the ideal “sweet spot.” It is a sufficiently large and reputable player capable of fundamentally reinforcing the platform’s content position, yet a far more realistic prospect in terms of closing a transaction.
Just a couple of years ago, Lionsgate’s position appeared critical. In 2024, under pressure from major institutional investors demanding “strategic alternatives,” the studio actively sought buyers amid a string of high-profile box office failures. At the time, releases such as Borderlands, the reboot of The Crow, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, Never Let Go, and Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare saddled the company with colossal losses.
However, the studio managed a complete turnaround. Two massive hits served as financial lifelines for Lionsgate: the grand musical biopic Michael, which is steadily closing in on the $1 billion milestone at the global box office, and the self-contained thriller The Housemaid, which unexpectedly surged in theaters, grossing over $400 million against a modest budget. The success of the latter has already guaranteed a sequel and restored the studio’s investment appeal.
Should the transaction close, Netflix will gain more than just production facilities; it will secure the keys to cult franchises that fit perfectly into its global business model of engineering endless cinematic universes, spin-offs, and episodic adaptations. The streamer would take control of:
- The Hunger Games
- John Wick
- Saw
- Twilight
- The Expendables
- Now You See Me
Market analysts project that Netflix could submit an official commercial proposal to Lionsgate’s management within the coming weeks.
